As senior vice president, general counsel, and secretary for NetApp, Matt Fawcett is responsible for all legal affairs worldwide, including corporate governance and securities law compliance, intellectual property matters, contracts, and mergers and acquisitions. He led the transformation of NetApp’s legal department into a globally-recognized, high-performance organization with a unique commitment to innovation.
As one of the leading voices on the intersection of law, technology, and business, Matt was named “One of America’s Top 50 General Counsels” by the National Law Journal and is widely recognized for redefining the role of legal counsel in the modern corporation. He is both a frequent speaker and author on the topics of innovation in the legal industry and leadership and management issues broadly.
Before joining NetApp, Matt was the senior vice president and general counsel of JDS Uniphase Corporation, where he ran a worldwide legal organization, managing dozens of acquisitions and strategic transactions and the legal affairs of the company.
Matt serves on the Boards of the Association of Corporate Counsel and the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley, is on the General Counsel Steering Committee for the National Association of Corporate Directors, and serves on a variety of advisory boards, including for Nasdaq, Thomson-Reuters, and Acritas.
He received his J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law and a B.A. from the University of California, Berkley.
